The genocide in Darfur is an ongoing tragedy that merits immediate attention. For that reason, we partnered with the Save Darfur Coalition to produce this 12-page tabloid section designed to teach middle and high school students about what is happening in that region. 100% of our proceeds will be donated to organizations working to aid people in Darfur. Our donation will be split between the Save Darfur Coalition and Doctors Without Borders. We chose those because we wanted one advocacy organization and one that was helping the people there by providing shelter, food, and medical aid.
According to the Save Darfur Coalition, at least 400,000 people have been killed in the conflict and more than two million have been displaced. More than 3.5 million people in the region rely on international aid for survival. Some 1.8 million children have been affected by the conflict, some of them displaced multiple times through repeated attacks. The impact of violence, disease, malnutrition and dependency is leaving a mark on this generation of children, weakening their capacity and trapping them in the cycle of poverty.
We believe that this tragedy offers NIE an opportunity to do what it does best—to educate children about the world while inspiring them to become globally-involved, caring and concerned citizens. The tabloid includes NIE activities and the national learning standards that it addresses.
We invite you to work with us to achieve this goal. Because we want this information to reach as many kids as possible, we are offering a special discount on this material. All proceeds will be donated to charity.
