This is a beautiful and poignant story about an African American family just after the end of the Civil War. When his father, an ex-slave, returns home after the war, Joe David and his sister and brother have to learn to survive as they accompany their dad out West to start a new life. It’s a lovely tale of the true meaning of freedom and family and the desire to live a good life “sooner or later.”
